Culture Sensitivity & Culture Shock

Students will be able to...

  • Define Culture and Cultural Sensitivity
  • Differentiate between surface culture and deep culture
  • Identify five barriers to cross cultural communication
  • Discuss four main cultural dimensions and their implications for the EFL classroom
  • Identify some main languages, continents, and countries

[5 min] Review: Business English/EAP & Interviewing 9:30-9:35
Please provide  4-5 points you can recall for each of the topics discussed yesterday.  


(Optional) [20 min] 100 people in the world
Place class into groups of three and have them answer the question. Give answers via PPT. This information is based on an interesting book for children titled, If the World were a Village

[30-40 min] Cultural Lecture Part I 10:05-10:40 

 Option A: Graphic Organizer Jigsaw
Give students jigsaw graphic organizer with the terms from the chapter. Have them get into groups and complete individually. Cover some highlights on the PPT when complete.


Option B: PPT
Go over PPT with students. Consider doing second half at the board rather than PPT to switch it up.

This is supposed to be my "fun" activity where we take a look at language and maps as a way to discuss history, travel, culture, etc.  We will have a little quiz on languages and take a deeper look at some major continents.
