Pronunciation

Students will...

  • Understand the uses of the IPA chart in its application to teaching ESL/EFL
  • Learn to recognize 3 levels of teaching pronunciation and why they are important for learners
  • Learn that pronunciation has "rules" and gain exposure to some of those rules
  • Understand the difference between suprasegmental and segmental language features and how they apply to teaching pronunciation.
[15-20 min] Review Charts for Listening and Reading
Distribute to students blank Tasks Charts and go over together as review. Finish any other tasks that didn't get completed in Listening and Reading day. Make sure that they understand the format or Pre-During-Post for setting up video/audio/readings!

[5-10 min] Small Group Discussion Questions (in PPT) (10:00-10:05)
  1. What might be a difference between teaching pronunciation for ESL vs EFL?
  2. Do you think all pronunciation errors should be corrected?  If so, why? If not, which ones should be corrected?
  3. Do you think English pronunciation is more difficult for certain language backgrounds (L1)? Why or why not?
  4. Do you think age affects someone’s ability to learn pronunciation?
  5. How much time do you think should be dedicated to teaching pronunciation?

[15-20 min] English Spelling: Oh me of my! (10:05-10:20)

[5 min] Why teach pronunciation?
Hold brief discussion on why pronunciation is a key factor in teaching. Have them answer it before you you show the PPT. Emphasize that knowing this doesn't always mean that we actually do it. Recasting errors in correct pronunciation is not pronunciation teaching. Distribute to students the handout on the three levels of pronunciation and tell them that is summarizes the main points of today's lecture

[60-80 min] Lecture on the 3 levels of teaching pronunciation (10:45-11:00/break/11:20-12:20)
  1. Sounds
  • Rather than show the pronunciation videos, perhaps students could research the the two rules and explain them to each other in pairs. They could read the rules on the internet to do this. Make sure they watch the videos at home because they are quite good.
  • After you teach the rules on Short vs long Vowels and minimal pairs. Have them try to make a minimal pairs activity where they teach this to the class. What could you do? Use the internet as a resource.
  • Show the video on shcwa so that they get it.

2. Individual words (multi-syllable words, word stress)
  • If backup activity is needed, you could do pond jumping game with stress.
3. Connected speech (sentence stress, rhythm, and intonation)

[15-20 min]
As a review/closing, give students the follow notes on the topic and allow them time to read the messy notes in pairs. Take questions that they have or go over the notes with the students as a clean closing the topic of pronunciation. Remind students that they don't need to be experts and know all this fancy terminology to be good pronunciation teachers. They just need to pay attention to what their students are struggling with and spend some time in class to address that pronunciation error by making them aware of the sound, stress, or intonation problem and then having them practice to correct it.
