Business English/EFL Interviews

  • Understand term ESP and basic subcategories
  • Describe sample reading, writing, listening, and speaking tasks for Business English
  • Identify some key cultural differences in business
  • Identify and complete the three stages to an EFL interview

[40 min] Business English Lecture  Part I: Needs Analysis 9:30-10:10
This brief lecture will cover the basics to what gets taught in a business English class with demonstrations of sample content. It starts with a focus on Needs Analysis that has the students think to create their own. I will then show them how to create a needs analysis that can be sent, edited and collected, digitally via google. It could potentially all be done on the students' phones.
BUSINESS ENGLISH PPT (new)

stop on slide 4 to show students sample needs analysis and to have them work to walk them through how to build a need analysis on Google Forms.

[40 min] Business English Lecture  Part II: Sample Activities 10:10-10:50
Show the students a sample listening activity.
LISTENING ACTIVITY-BUSINESS MEETING

Place them into groups and have them describe what they would do with this video to insert it into a lesson. They should be placed into three different groups and they can write their response into a google doc (this provides the teacher an opportunity to address google docs in the classroom. After students have had time to think and share their ideas with the class, show them the sample materials that go with this video and watch the video again.

[15-20 min] Interviewing Cultural Differences 11:20-11:35 (might skip)
In this part of today's class, we will take a look at some regional/cultural difference in interviewing. Briefly discuss the importance of culture in interviewing. Point out that many EFL interviewers are actually native speakers, it will just depend on the school. Even so, it is good to know some common cultural differences of the places we will be moving to.

Set Up: Write ASIA, EUROPE and LATIN AMERICA on the board. Then, call on volunteers to to read each section of the reading below on their own silently (each person just reads ONE section. There should be at least two or three people for each region. Have them read individually and then work together to come up with some bullet points on the board under their region (just the highlights). After each group is done, have them explain some interesting/useful things from their region to the class. (They will need to click on the reading below)
INTERVIEWING ACROSS CULTURES

[25 min] EFL Interview Lecture 11:35-12:00
Give Students Interview Handout and go over the parts together, making sure that they understand the common format. Emphasis that interview formats vary widely, but this is a common format.
INTERVIEW HANDOUT

[30 min] EFL interview Practice (takes around 30 minutes)
After the interview handout, students will pair up and practice interviewing. They should look at the employee cards to role play with a fake job (see below) or they can look online for a job they want. After they have their "fake job" each person should then brainstorm possible interview questions (look to same interview questions...remember to include children questions if the job is with kids).
Then students interview in pairs following the format given in the interview handout.  Rotate to make sure that each person gets interviewed.
