Teaching Methods



Students will be able to...

  • Differentiate between approach, method, and technique.
  • Compare and contrast well-known traditional teaching methods.
  • Explain how contemporary teaching methods differ from traditional ones.
  • Describe communicative language teaching (CLT).
  • Summarize the first changes to language teaching after the advent of CLT.
  • Identify characteristics of the community language learning approach.
  • Describe the general procedures used in a silent way classroom.
  • Summarize the pillars of Suggestopedia.
  • Discuss ways to use concepts from total physical response (TPR) and total physical response storytelling (TPRS) in an ESL/EFL classroom.
  • Explain the basic principles of content-based instruction.
  • Describe ways to implement cooperative learning, task-based learning, project-based learning, and differentiation.
Materials: Print off Chapter 4 Handout and have speakers ready for videos. Perhaps bring CD for alternative video on teaching methods

[5-10 min] Warm-Up: Video & Technique, Method, Approach
To get students excited about the topic of methods, show them one of the following videos and ask them to think about the way in which this business approaches learning language.

Ask them tUse scale in handout to briefly reveiew/teach the differences in these terms

[60-90 min] Lecture/Videos on Methods/Techniques 11:40-12:50
Distribute Chapter 4 Handout to Students. Go over the method videos, rotating between watching video and using handout/textbook for discussion.

Supplemental A: Can Watch the Project-Based video on Phrasal Verbs if time/energy is there
Supplemental B: Watch Laura Reading class from supplemental textbook. Is she using any of these methods?

[20 min] Back-Up A 
Possible Follow up: Have students pick grammar or language function (greeting, apologizing) and teach it using one or a combination of methods. Students can then guess the method(s). 

[15 min]  Back Up B Ch 4 Quiz 2 in Moodle
Have students open up moodle and complete the quiz together in pairs/as a class.


[15 min] Build a Crossword Puzzle with  Methods 
Show students Discovery Education Website and Sample Crossword Puzzle. Then have them work individually to build a puzzle using the methods learned today.

[20 min] Build your own ESL Task using a method
Consider the grammar points that we discussed this morning or a general  topic (shopping, job interviews, holidays, pollution). Working with your partner, create 2-3 activities that have demonstrate application of the seven methods we have discussed. Write them on piece of paper and be prepared to share them with the class.
