Learner Differences/Multiple Intelligences

Students will...

• Recognize what type of learner they are (often related to the way they teach)
• Learn the most common types of learning styles.
• Recognize how to adapt classroom activities to address different learning styles

[20 min] Students Take Two Learner Differences Quizzes and discuss   11:40-12:00
Allow students time to take quizzes and share their answers in small groups. Have some share their answers with the class.

[20 min] Lecture 

Option A: lecture on the different types of learner styles 12:00-12:20
Go through PPT with students addressing the basics to the Multiple Intelligence Theory. You could also have them read it and assign one Type to each group. Make connections between how this theory should be effecting your teaching (even your current teaching!)


Option B:  Jigsaw Definitions on the Multiple Intelligences 12:00-12:20
Divide class into groups via the 3 colored sheets of paper. Each color corresponds to a different learning ability. Write the following directions on the board,

Directions:

1.  Your group will be responsible for becoming "experts" in your learning styles.  Read today's PPT or research online to understand your style.
2. You will be given 4-7 minutes to a) learn a definition of your style b) think of corresponding classroom activities for that style. You can't write.
3. I will then put you into new groups and you must teach each other the a) definitions and b) sample activities. You can't read.

[60 min] Work on 10-15 minute presentation that address learner styles 12:20-1:20
Now that we have established the basics to the different ways in which people are better suited to "learn," let's take that information and put it into practice. You will be paired up and given time to create 2 activities that address 2 different learning styles. Your presentation should be brief 10 minutes is more than enough to show your activities.

PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

1. Study the Multiple Intelligence Theory 
2. Pick one simple theme (Family, food, travel) or one grammar point (possessive pronouns, prepositions).
3. Create two tasks that are related to your topic. Each task need to address a different learning style.
4. Prepare for a 10 min presentation to your peers

*Consider Practicing your board skills and avoid PPT if possible

Back Up Activities
[15 min] Backup: Have students complete the upcoming homework  in the workbook and do their readings in class.
[20 min] Extension Activities
• When students complete the exercises, they can study the grammar at the online site.
• Have students work in pairs to think of a creative communicative activity that they could do with one piece of language that they used today. (hint: You could use preposition with directions). The activity should follow PPP
• Taboo: Have students split into pairs and write down 8-10 grammar terms we learned today. They are to have the other guess the their term through explanation and avoidance of term.
• Pair up. One research conjunctions and the other research Interjections. Then explain their grammar to the other with any ideas on how they might teach it.
