This 7-minute TED talk clip is quite telling. Although it suggest to addressing a specific population, the principles are widely applicable to all learning environments and different ages. Questions Pre-Listening

1. What is her view on negative relationships between teachers and kids? How does she feel it affects education?
2. What happened in her ratio lesson? What was the point for her giving this personal example?
3.  Why did she tell the students the fictitious story about them being the best students and her being the best teacher? What was she trying achieve?
4. What did she do with the student who received 2/20 on a quiz? Why did she used this approach?
5. What does she say about "liking" your students? Why does she say that "the tough ones" show up?

[10 min] Warm-Up Seating Arrangement 
Have students work in pairs to complete a seating arrangement chart. The chart ties together activities and ages with potential seating arrangements. Students are to critically evaluate which arrangement would work best for each classroom dynamics. Encourage students to get up and draw the arrangement on the board to justify their answers.

[15 min]General Guidelines for Classroom Management
Can take the following 8 pieces of information and turn the activity into a jigsaw

• Place students into groups of three and give group 2 topics on one piece of paper
• Tell the groups that you will give them 5-8 minutes to memorize their topic and try to come up with at least 2 examples of how to incorporate this guideline in their classes. They are encouraged to use examples from their past or practicum to do this.
• They are then to jigsaw into three new groups and fill out sections 1-6 on the worksheet by teaching the other groups about their topic. 
• We will go over 7-8 together as a class.

[20 min] Poster Contract Project 11:40-12:00

Creating clear rules and setting exceptions from Day 1 is one of the most important parts to successful classroom management. First, write a list of the topics that teachers should address on the first day of class. Then, create either a student learning contract or a poster that deals with classroom rules/expectations. Share with the class.

Have students place themselves into small groups (3-4) according to the age of students that they would like to teach. Distribute chart CLASSROOM INTERACTIONS CHART. Allow students to go to the board and recreate the chart. They are to also identify the following characteristics

• Age of students
• Level
• Grammar Point and Theme (encourage grammar!)

They have 20-30 minutes to review the chart tasks from the course and consider how they relate to a their age and language theme. Then, working together fill out the chart with sample tasks.

Optional: If enthusiasm is high, I may have them present their ideas in an informal rotating presentation style where half the class rotates for presentation and half stay at their board to answer questions.

Tell students that today I would like them to get with people who are likely to be teaching their same age group. If you don't know what age, go into a group that needs more people. To start out today's lesson, I will be giving you scenario situations for both adult and young learners classes. Read the Scenario and discuss the advice you would give.
